Last Winter Dubs Series event is April 5

Come play some doubles on Saturday, April 5. We will be playing 666 which is 6 holes best disc, 6 holes worst disc, and 6 holes alternate shot.

Round 1 will be on Old Glory and round 2 will be on Hogback.

Boyd Pond Update: 3 steps back...

The course we are building in Aiken County took a few big steps backward over the winter. Here's the good news and bad news.

Bad news: The Park staff who was helping has been reassigned to other parks. There is now just one park staff member for the entire park!

Good news: An Eagle Scout's project to help build trails and tee boxes has been approved.

Bad news: The power company clear-cut a huge chunk through the park for new power lines and ruined two great holes, one of which was epic.

Good news: I've added two new holes. One new power pole makes a decent obstacle. However, I will still miss hole 3!

Good news: The power company helped woodchip a few holes and cut up some trees. This was before the ice storm, unfortunately.

Bad news: Thanks to the ice storm, most fairways that had been cleared are now covered again with downed trees.

Good news: No baskets were smooshed.

Bad news: April is going to be very busy for us at Killer B and the Hippo, so we won't be able to get out there again until May.

I am discouraged because we were so close to finishing. We'll just have to regroup and have at it again. Who's up for a work party?!

This week at the Hive

Tuesday Singles League Tuesday singles league at the Hippodrome is back! We run a fun, casual league perfect for newer players and competitive enough for seasoned players. With at least three divisions to choose from, you'll find good competition no matter your skill level.

• Cost: $5 ($1 to the course, $1 divisional CTP, $3 to payout in Buzz Bucks). Hippodrome members receive a $1 discount. Cash only please!
• Time: Be ready to go at 6:00.
• Format: Singles, usually three divisions (Adv, Int., Rec)
• Extras: A free Killer B Skills Competition ends each night. You never know what's going to end up in the Box of Fun prize box!
• Course: Varies, but we will be playing Old Glory Reds to beat the sunset the first few weeks.

Friday: Glow at the Hippo

Glow ends this Friday for a while. We had a great turnout last time so let's do it again! Come chuck plastic in the dark!

Toney shoots a -10 to start league!

Start!!!!! League started with a bang last night with 23 golfers on a beautiful 75-degree evening. Curtis goes down as the first to sign up for league in 2014. You're #1, buddy!

Charles Toney was the star of the night, though. He shot the lights out on Old Glory Reds with a 50 (-10) to take down Advanced. He shredded the back 10 with 5 deuces in a row.

Congrats to Thomas Reynolds for winning the ace pool throw-off and Brandon Phipps for winning our first Killer B Skills Challenge, which was putting. Brandon won a bag of Jelly Belly jelly beans from the Box of Fun.

Race tightens up for Winter Series Dubs title

We had a good turnout for event #2 in our monthly Dubs series this past Saturday with 22 players.

The Rec division title is going to come down to the last event on April 5 with three teams within striking distance of each other. Intermediate is also a tight race among 3 or four golfers. See the complete standings here.

Well that was fun!

Yeah boy! I won my first tournament of the year this weekend and took down Advanced Masters at the Earlewood Classic in Columbia, SC. It was a tough battle, but I did it! I'm obviously happy that I won but even happier with how I won it.

After starting the day with an ugly 62 (+2) in round 1, I remembered how to golf in round 2 and jumped from 9th to 2nd with a smoking 997-rated 51 (-9)! I continued my steady play in round 3 and held a two-stroke lead going into the last round.

My last round did not start too well and I went 3, 4, 4 -- definitely not good scores on a course where you need to birdie every hole possible. With my lead now gone, I got some luck on our fourth hole and avoided taking my third 4 in a row. My disc flew directly over the basket and skidded to a stop half in the stream and half on land. I saved a 3, moved on, and worked on slowly regaining my lead.

Chad and David pushed me to the end making good drives and putts, but both had trouble on one of the last holes and I breathed a sigh of relief. Mrs Killer B has come up to watch the last round and was my official scorekeeper and cheerleader. She knows that I don't like knowing scores, so found ways to keep me motivated and under control without making me think too much. "Uh, you need to get some birdies, dear," was all I needed to hear to know that I was in danger of losing.

Later that night I was thinking about the tournament and how I didn't let my horrible first round do me in. I am pretty proud of that because in the past, I would have dwelled on it and just made things worse. All those sports cliches you hear pro athletes say are true. You just have to keep pushing forward, forget about the last shot, and play your game.

This win was also satisfying because for the past several months I have been in a good old-fashioned slump. My putting had gone on vacation and everything I tried to get it back didn't work. I knew something was wrong but just couldn't figure it out and even though I practiced almost every day the last few weeks, it just seemed to get worse.

On Friday afternoon the day before the tourney, I went out to the putting area at the store and tried again. Nothing but misses left, right, over, and under. "Forget it," I said. "I'm hopeless." I went back into the shop and started to close for the day. Something in the back of my head was still nagging me though, telling me not to quit and figure the damn problem out. So I grabbed my putters again and returned to the practice basket.

I stood there for a minute or two and went over in my head what was feeling awkward about my putt. Then it hit me -- my left foot was too wide and my leg was getting in the way of my arm motion. I moved my foot back so that it was almost directly behind my right foot and bam! That was it! Everything started to go in. I was pumped that I finally figured it out!
