There are a bunch of golfers from New England up in Rochester, NY for AM Worlds this week. I bumped into these guys this afternoon at Parma before their second round. It's great to see the Hive in action!

Billy Dunne and Dave Richardson are two New Englanders who tore up the course first round. Keep it up, boys!

The B is blogging -- Store closed Sunday to Sunday

The store will be closed Sunday, July 25 through Sunday, July 30 and will reopen Monday, August 1.

I will be up in Rochester, NY blogging at the Amateur World Championships. Initially I was thinking about playing since I played in the last two in KC and Ohio, but when the PDGA asked me if I wanted to be their official blogger I jumped at the chance. I guess they liked what I did for the Vibram Open the past few years.  :-)

It's going to be fun seeing what goes on behind the scenes at a huge event like this. Over 400 players are expected and about 40 are from New England. Excellent.

This past Wednesday I got a call from a reporter from the Augusta Chronicle. He had heard that we were coming to town and wanted to get the scoop. Thanks, David!

Disc golf store to open in Augusta
An area already rich in disc golf will soon have the opportunity to be richer with an addition to downtown.

Killer B Disc Golf, a Massachusetts-based store, is making the move to Augusta and is set to open by mid-September. The store will be at 863 Broad St., between Eighth and Ninth streets.
John Borelli, owner of Killer B, said the store will feature the biggest brands in discs, baskets and other equipment for the sport. However, the store will offer much more than just basic equipment.

"I like to try different things and see if they work," Borelli said. "In the store, there's a back room where we're thinking about putting a TV, some magazines and things. I also give lessons. We do corporate outings, give demos, work with church groups, Cub Scouts, and just groups of people who want to try it out."

Killer B is also involved in leagues and tournaments in the Massachusetts area, and Borelli said he intends to do the same in Augusta. He visited various tournaments in June in Augusta and sponsored some in an attempt to spread the word about the store.

"For the first few months we're just focused on getting our feet wet and spreading the word," Borelli said. "We just want to get a feel for the type of player that's down there."

Borelli cited the interest in disc golf in the Augusta area as a big reason for the move, as well as the fact that his wife, Marcy, works for the Professional Disc Golf Association at Wildwood Park in Appling. There are six courses within 30 miles of where the store will be located, and a PDGA tournament and the Collegiate Disc Golf National Championship are held annually.

"Rumor has it there's no store in Augusta, so we couldn't resist," Borelli said. "Around me right now (in Massachusetts), there's my course that's next to the store, and there are maybe four courses within an hour. Compared to Augusta, there are four or five within 10 minutes of one another, so the opportunity was there and we couldn't pass it up."

It's official -- we're moving to Augusta, GA!

Well, it's official. Killer B Disc Golf is moving to Augusta, GA in mid-September!

We signed our lease for 863 Broad St yesterday. We're downtown near the James Brown statue, down the street from Nacho Mama's and around the corner from Augusta Common Park.

We're pretty close to all the courses in the Augusta area and I bet a bunch more I haven't discovered yet:

• Hippodrome - 2.5 miles
• Lake Olmsted - 3 miles
• Riverview - 3 miles
• Pendleton-King Park - 4 miles
• Patriots Park - 20 miles
• Wildwood Park (IDGC) - 25 miles

We're excited about getting involved in the GA/SC disc golf scene and look forward to meeting everyone. Prepare to touch lots of plastic in a few months!

Busy as a Killer B
It's going to be a busy next month and a half for me. Between getting the house ready to sell, packing, and cleaning, I'll be blogging at AM Worlds in Rochester, NY at the end of July and then Pro Worlds in Santa Cruz, CA the following week. After that, it's back to MA for a few weeks and then more blogging at the Vibram Open NT down the road in Leicester, MA. Once that's done after Labor Day, it'll be the final pack up and drive down to Augusta (after a final farewell tournament somebody's going to throw for us, right, hint hint?!)

Meanwhile, Killer B #2 Marcy will be getting the Augusta shop ready and continuing to spread the buzzz around town and at various leagues and events. Keep an eye out for her! Are there any handy disc golf locals who can help paint and build shelves? Let me know (email).

As for our MA store, it'll stay open until at least Labor Day, but will be closed while I'm away those two weeks for Worlds. So, don't procrastinate! Come get some new plastic while you can!

Registration for the Flatrock Blueberry Jam on Aug. 6 is now open.

Sean and Helen Franchi own a great course on their property in western MA and always run a very fun tournament. What other course do you know of that has a huge gong on it?!

Many if not all of the funky homemade baskets have been replaced with Innova Sportscatchers over the past year thanks to local players and sponsors (like Killer B Disc Golf!)

Daniel shot the hot round of the day with a 49! Lots of good scores out there and many personal bests.

It's Two Disc Dilemma Sunday!

I'm excited to see how my idea for a two-disc-only tournament goes over tomorrow. There are several people signed up who played in our earlier "regular" tournament in April, so it'll be fun to compare scores.

Already this week several guys have shot or tied personal bests at Devens using only two discs during practice rounds -- Luke, Alex G, Mike M, Marc D, Donnie. Keep it simple, stupid.

Hopefully people will come out of this tournament realizing that they do not need every disc under the sun and that they just need to learn how to throw the ones they have. Not a great marketing pitch for a guy who sells plastic for a living, but I think it's worth saying.

I'm also excited because this is my first tournament since playing in a bitter cold Team Challenge in January. That day it was about 3 degrees; tomorrow should be a little bit warmer at 87 degrees! It's been way too long and I miss the camaraderie and the competition. I can't wait and look forward to a fun day on the course. Hill Yeah!

PS. It's no dilemma for me. I'm using an Aviar and a Squall.

Luke's on fire!

Luke A just stopped in the shop to show us his scorecard from his practice round so far. He is using a FLX Buzzz and Wizard and an ESP Buzzz and Spike. Can he keep it up and set a new course record with just two discs?

Update: He did! Finished with a 46. Crazy!

It's been a while since something more interesting than a cigarette butt appeared in front of the store.

Finally today I pulled in to find this funky-looking car parked directly in front of the front door. I'm no car guy, but it looks like a custom kit car to me. Pretty cool.

My group was about to tee off on 15 and was lucky enough to hear the ka-ching and Donnie's whooping after it.

I met someone this weekend with the perfect Killer B truck -- the Dodge Rumble Bee! This truck was pimped out and one mean mofo. Even the fin on the back moves up and down according to how fast the truck is going. Crazy.

Latest Disc Golf Live episode posted

The latest episode of Disc Golf Live features the final round of the 2010 USDGC and a snippet of Derek Hastings' Vibram Open DVD from last year.

Be sure to circle Labor Day weekend on your calendar for the Vibram Open at Maple Hill in Leicester, MA. All the top touring pros will be there and I'll also be blogging again for the event.
