Swag Fail

Back in February, Marcy came across an energy drink called Killer-B and we thought it would be great for them to sponsor our main tournament of the year, King of the Hill.

I sent them an email telling them that a good chunk of disc golfers drink energy drinks and it would be a great opportunity for them to expose their already popular brand by sponsoring the event.

Or, they could send over a Street Team and pass out free samples. It was a no-brainer. Killer-B and Killer B. Of course they'd be up for it!

They wrote back and thanked me for my interest but didn't think disc golf was "extreme" enough and didn't fit in with motocross, snowboarding, and snowmobile flipping. They did promise to send me some "cool <brand name> swag", though, so I was happy. More free stuff to give away at the tournament.

It never arrived, so I sent them a reminder last week. I figured this multi-million dollar beverage company would send a shirt, a hat, or maybe a skateboard. Okay, I didn't really expect a skateboard, but I did expect something more than what came in the mail today.

The "cool swag" was a sheet of stickers. Kind of a letdown, but free stuff is free stuff and I'm sure I'll use it as some sort of silly CTP for the 20-somethings at our tournament!  :-)

Ouch!

Nathan Spear stopped by the store today and shared these photos of a crazy shot he threw on hole 14 at Pye Brook Park in Topsfield, MA recently. Ouch!

Scenes from the Front Door

Today's SFFD features Chuck sporting his new Killer B Disc Golf shirt as he watches the old Fotomat hut reappear from behind the huge snowpile in the parking lot.

The pile is slowly melting, but my guess is that it'll still be here this time next month if we keep getting this sunny, but cold weather. I've had enough!

Lost disc 101

As any course grows and attracts more new players, the more important it is to educate these new players on disc golf etiquette, especially when it comes to what to do with a disc they just found.

I like to give each person the benefit of the doubt when it comes to keeping a found disc. For some reason, people are overcome with the excitement of a disc they randomly came across in the woods. Woohoo! What luck! Something for free! The moral compass of their brain usually shuts off and they lose all sense of right versus wrong. I know. I've been there.

In my early days of disc golf I was on vacation out of state and found a beatup DX Banshee with some guy's name and number on it. I had no clue if there was a lost and found anywhere and because I wasn't from the area, I figured I'd keep it and maybe run into the guy later in the round. Yeah right, but that's what my brain tricked me into thinking. It's stupid, but true. (This was also before cell phones, so I couldn't even call the guy from the course.)

So, I returned to MA and months later found myself teeing off on hole 14 at Maple Hill over the water. I did what most newbs do and pulled out the sacrifical lamb, the DX Banshee, and chucked it over the pond. Because I had a weeny arm back then and was still very afraid of throwing anywhere near water, I overcompensated and threw way left of the pond and into the netting that used to protect the other fairway.

After some looking, course owner Steve Dodge called out, "Found it," and gives me a Boy am I disappointed in you look. He had flipped the disc over and saw that it wasn't mine. He didn't say anything, but the look just about made me want to confess to murder.

It was then that I learned my lesson, or maybe it just finally occurred to me that, duh, you're not supposed to keep a disc you found that is clearly marked with another's info. How simple and easy, but for whatever reason many players, both new and experienced, think it is okay to use a found disc without even trying to contact the person. That's just not cool.

Since then, I've had a few discs turn up in the Devens lost and found where I have called the person and he's told me he's never even been to the course! Others have been totally excited to get their discs back while others say, "That's cool, but you can keep it." I once found a disc at a course in Pooler, GA and the guy left work and came over to get his disc right away. Sometimes I get adult beverages and food from grateful owners, so returning discs can be a good thing!

There are good people out there. Are you going to be one of them?

Scenes from the Front Door

Welcome to another installment of Scenes from the Front Door.

Today we feature a guy who parked in our lot and walked his woolly mammoth in the vacant lot across the street. After discovering some treasure in the old shed that looked like a picture frame, he let his dog leave a little treasure of its own on the sidewalk. Classy.

Name that disc golfer

Can you guess who was the first person to buy a new Killer B Hive disc? Here's a hint: he's a rising NEFA star with a monster flick about to enter his first full season in AM1.

Thanks to the rest of you who stopped in today and grabbed some new Lat64 plastic and Killer B discs. Throw 'em well!

I spent a good chunk of Wed. afternoon folding all of our new t-shirts. Ain't they purty? Just 10 bucks gets you one.

Introducing: Scenes from the Front Door

The store is on a fairly busy street that connects the small towns of Shirley, Devens, and Ayer, MA. As I sit at my desk looking out the front windows, I see a lot of cars and people go by. My store is next to an oldtime barber and a florist, and at the other end of the shopping plaza is a pizza joint, Asian market and Chinese restaurant.

Two kids in a clunker with a noisy muffler were pulled over last Thursday.

Over the past few months I've noticed several things as I sit in my chair looking out the windows:
  • People don't like to park in front of the store they are going in to. Most of my customers park at least two spots to the left of my store while people going to the barber next door tend to park in front of my store.
  • Even though the barber hangs a big "Closed" sign in his door when he is closed, most people drive in, park, stare at the door, look around, and then backup and drive away. It never fails, even when there are no cars in front.
  • Random drivers use the parking lot for quick naps, reading, killing time, or as a staging spot to go for a run or meet others.
  • I know it is 3:30ish when a couple of schools buses turn around in the parking lot.
  • Kids from the school down the street would rather stand in the cold rain in the parking lot smoking and doing nothing than do it somewhere warm and dry. When asked if they have nothing better to do, their response is, "No."
  • People who have never heard of disc golf make the funniest faces when they walk by the store and try to figure out just what the heck I am selling. Yesterday was the best yet when a man and woman walked by twice. The man stuck his face up to the window, put his hands by his eyes and peered in, oblivious to the three of us staring right back at him. He face was pure confusion.
  • People who take up one and a third parking spots like to give me the stink eye when I park as close as possible to them in my spot. One guy gave me the evil eye, backed out, got out to inspect his door for dings, and gave me an even more evil eye when he didn't find any. Like I'm the asshole.

Thank you guy at Dick's

A dad and his two kids came in Sunday, curious about disc golf. They said they had been playing it on the Xbox 360 Kinect and wanted to try it out for real.

They had gone over to Dick's Sporting Goods to get some discs and someone over there told them to go to Killer B Disc Golf because we had a better selection of discs at much cheaper prices. Now that's pretty cool by itself, but it's even cooler that the guy was a Dick's employee. Take that, big box sporting goods store!

So, if you are reading this Dick's employee guy, thanks for the referral and please keep sending them my way!

Come on, sun!

Dope Duncan. Wurd!
It's amazing what a little sunshine and warm weather will do for a disc golfer's need to get outside and chuck plastic.

With temps in the mid-40s today, the course was getting some play and a steady stream of golfers stopped by the shop. Even my sister and brother-in-law stopped by on their way back from vacation. Of course no one came in when they were here, so I'm sure they thought I was kidding when I said that people actually shopped here. Ten minutes after they left some people came in, of course. It figures!

World Champ stops by the store

World disc golf champion Eric McCabe stopped by the store last week, or was it ex-49ers QB Jeff Garcia?

Actually, it was local Jimmy Blakeney who bears quite a resemblance to the two.

Luck of the Irish!

Trenton Solomon just stopped by the store with Jeff Cooper and casually dropped that he had aced hole 2 at Devens about an hour ago. Well Happy St. Patrick's Day to you, Trenton!

His lucky disc was a flattop Roc.

Happy birthday, Neena!

It's Killer B #5's birthday today. Happy birthday, Neena!

It's really not as hard being an English Setter on St. Patrick's Day as you might think.

Did you get invited to Worlds?

The official invites to both the Am and Pro Worlds have been posted. Did you make the cut? I did!

> Invites and more info

Don't worry if you didn't get your invitation because after May 16, any PDGA member can register.

If you haven't been to a huge weeklong event, you should really try to get to Rochester, NY (AM) or Santa Cruz, CA (Pro) this year.

I played in the KC AM Worlds in 2009 and the Ohio AM Worlds last year. KC was by far my favorite so far. It was just so much fun playing everyday and being totally engulfed in disc golf.

To get a feel of what goes on, check out my blogs from 2009 and 2010 on the Devens Disc Golf website.
I'm not sure if I'm going again this year now that I have the store to worry about, but I could easily be convinced. Who's with me?

And the winner is ......

Congratulations to Don Boutin from MA for sending in the winning slogan for our 2011 We Need a Slogan Contest! Don was one of three people who submitted our favorite slogan, "Catch the Buzzzz!"

Because we had three people submit the same slogan, we had our blind dog Aspen randomly pick the big winner by using her treat-sniffing nose. Watch the video and see how she did it.

Big Winner Boutin
Don wins a Killer B Prize Pack consisting of a Killer B t-shirt, hat, disc, mini, and sticker! Runners-up Jenn Kinkade from FL and Jack Ullstrup from AZ each receive their choice of a KB hat or t-shirt. Congratulations!

We received over 80 entries for this contest and it was hard to settle on just one slogan. Some were really creative, some were a bit abstract and thoughtful, and others, well... thanks for entering!

Killer B Disc Winner
Everyone who sent in an idea was entered to win a Killer B Buzzz SS, Hornet, or Nuke. The lucky winner of that drawing is Dave Townsend from ME! Congrats, Dave!

Thanks for helping us out. Now get out there and Catch the Buzzzz!

Show us your Hive!

The Hive has been spotted at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, GA! Ken Gary sent in this photo after a trip down there for some warm weather golf. Thanks, Ken!

Can you find it?

Another first for Killer B

Today is another big day for us at the store. We are expecting a box of our very first Killer B Disc Golf gear! Can't wait to see how they came out.

I'll post some pix when they get here.

Slogan Contest
As for the slogan contest, we should be choosing one this weekend. With 87 entries to go through, it takes some time to whittle down our favorites.

King of the Hill
Good news! We are bumping our tournament up to a Killer B Tier PDGA event. That's huge!

Registration opens tomorrow at 9 AM. Don't miss this killer event, dude.
